Scratch Off
Do scratch-off tickets hold any value and what are your chances of actually winning any money?
Why are people always buying scratch-off tickets? Shouldn't you waste your money on better things? I'd rather purchase alcohol and cigarettes than spend my money on those things. What are the odds of winning? What are the chances?
Non winning tickets are occasionally entered into a second chance drawing. The odds are generally pretty low that a person who buys and plays these tickets will come out ahead...that is, most people will spend more money buying the tickets than any winnings they might get. Occasionally a player might win ten or twenty bucks, and feel like s/he's struck it rich...but if that person has bought fifty bucks worth of tickets to get that one winning ticket, s/he has actually lost money.
The last time I looked at a ticket (my husband buys them occasionally, I never do) the odds were printed on it, or there was a website with the odds on the various games. There are usually several different kinds of games running at the same time, and gamblers get a feeling of power by choosing one kind over another. Gamblers gamble because it's a thrill for them, it's exciting. I lived in Las Vegas for nearly a decade, and I never understood it. I did go to the casinos on occasion, but that was to eat at the buffets or see the shows. Gambling has never had any appeal to me.
Me, I'd rather spend the money on books or video games, but a lot of people consider those things a waste of time and money.
